Ever since I moved to New York last year, I've been on a mission to find the best ice cream/gelato in the City. I finally got around to trying Grom a few weeks ago. I was sitting at one of their outside tables by myself, watching the swarms wandering around the West Village, and I overheard two girls talking about their gelato. One was telling the other that she had been looking forward to going to Grom all week for the fresh whipped cream they make available (and charge you extra for of course).
But fresh whipped cream shouldn't be such a big deal because its mind-numbingly easy to make. Grom isn't so great. Honestly, that girl would have been better off buying a pint of Haagen-Daz (much cheaper and just as good IMHO) and making herself some real whipped cream at home. She could have even made her own ice cream.
Besides being easy to make, you can be sure to use hormone-free, grass-fed dairy, etc. I usually buy the heavy cream from Ronnybrook Dairy or Milk Thistle because if I'm going to indulge in whipped cream, I might as well eat the best. To make enough whipped cream for two people, I pour about 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of heavy cream in a bowl or measuring cup, mix in about a tablespoon of confectioners sugar, and a teaspoon or so of cognac or vanilla extract. Then I beat the cream on high with a hand mixer or standing mixer and get perfect whipped cream in minutes. Its important to keep checking the cream while you're beating it, to make sure its the right texture. When you get firm peaks, you knows its ready. Be careful not to over beat it, or you'll get butter!
